Hermit Crab Island

What else can i feed my 3 hermit crabs?
Okay so yesterday i bought them from Petsmart along with a hermit crab starter kit that didn’t include food. So i bought Zoo Med Hermit Crab pellets along with Crab Island fruit and flower food and mixed those 2 together. My mom said that they can eat peanut butter is this true? Also i heard that it is a good idea to bathe them 1-2 times a week what do i use and what do i bathe them in? Sorry i’m fairly new to this i haven’t had hermit crabs since i was about 4 or 5 and now i’m 20.Thanks!
Please don’t follow any of the advice in the other answers before doing your own research. Hermit crabs are sensitive to chemicals in most human foods, primarily preservatives and pesticides. For this reason, “organic” peanut butter is fine, but not the normal cheap stuff.
You can find a lot of food for them at the grocery store and even in nature, you can learn about some of their food and where to get it to save money here:

More important than food is that the crabitat is set up properly with good humidity and temperature levels. If the air is not humid enough, the crabs will not be able to breathe properly and will live very short, painful lives. This guide is easy to read and will let you know what needs to be done to keep your hermit crabs healthy.

If you have deep enough water, which you’ll learn about in that article, don’t bother bathing your hermit crabs. Bathing disturbs the natural water reserves that they keep in their shell. They know when it is dry and when it needs to be changed.
Unfortunately, hermit crab starter kits never provide everything that your crabs need.

Surfer Safari $10.95 If undersea creatures make you think Nemo you haven’t yet had the chance to swim in Sherman’s Lagoon. This watery world off the imaginary island of Kapupu in the South Pacific is home to a great white shark named Sherman; his wife, Megan; turtle buddy Fillmore; geeky fish pal Ernest; and Hawthorne, a macho hermit crab. The situations this crew manages to get into are definitely not Disneyesque. This tenth Sherman’s Lagoon collection includes all the up-there topics that down-there sea animals usually miss out on: things like which swimmers taste better, those in one- or two-piece suits; how to repair a dryer at 20,000 leagues; and where to find psychiatric help on a coral reef. You could say Sherman’s just a regular guy with a slightly salty look at how things work. Creator Jim Toomey excels at meshing the human and sea life worlds in a way that makes joke-cracking crabs and style-conscious sharks seem perfectly normal. This collection is sure to hook new fans and reel in longtime Sherman aficionados like never before. |
