Marine Hermit Crabs Care

July 25th, 2011 admin No comments

marine hermit crab question…?

i have an outbreak of golden diatom algea on my rocks and crushed coral substrate in my 55gallon tank that has just finshed cycling. i m not as concerned with the diatoms on the rocks as i am on the substrate. will hermit crabs remove this? are hermit crabs hard to care for?

First of all, hermits are very easy to care for.

Hermits will more than likely NOT consume diatom algae. Some may but I’ve never seen on do it. The only way to get rid of this algae is to starve it out. It derives its nutrition from lighting, silicates, nitrates, and phosphates. You should probably try to eliminate each of these one at a time. Make sure that you don’t leave the lights on for too long. Have your water tested. If you do not control it now it will grow out of control.
