all the hermit crab supplies. how much would these cost?

soi just bought a hermit crab and i have about
40$ to spend. would this be enough to buy everything for them?{i have two males}

right now there living in the tiny plastic box they give you at the store.

Please do not spend your $40 on a hermit crab kit. They do not include everything that your hermit crab needs and will ensure that your crabs lead a short life, as indicated by the other answerer who has had various hermit crabs over the past few years. A hermit crab will live decades if kept properly.

Here is your shopping list, I’ll try to keep it under $40:

At the pet store:
$13.00 – 10 gallon glass or acrylic aquarium
$ 3.00 – Tap water conditioner (DeChlor, Betta Water Conditioner, or similar)
$ 4.00 – Aquarium salt water mix (Instant Ocean, Oceanic, or similar)
$ 3.00 – HBH Hermit Crab Variety Bites
$ 5.00 – Hygrometer (for measuring humidity, get a thermometer too if you can)
$28.00 – SUBTOTAL

At a hardware store:
$ 4.00 – 50 lb bag of play sand
$32.00 – SUBTOTAL

At a craft store:
$ 4.00 – bag of shells (choose one with the right size shells)
$ 4.00 – cholla wood for climbing
$40.00 – TOTAL

Now that you have all this stuff, put sand in the aquarium, at least 3 inches deeper than the crab is tall. Add some water to the sand to make it a bit moist, the sand should always be at “sandcastle consistency.”

Find two small bowls for holding water. If possible, they should be deep enough for your crabs to get water into their shell. Put some sand in the bottom so they can get out. Fill one with fresh water and one with salt water (made according to the directions on the salt water mix). Be sure to use the tap water conditioner on any water that you give them and change the water every 3 or 4 days.

Get some plastic wrap from the kitchen and stretch it across the top of the tank, then make some big holes in it for air to get in and out. The plastic wrap will help to hold in the humidity. The temperature should be 72-80 degrees F and the humidity should be 70 to 80%

Boil the empty shells in water for about 10 minutes to clean them.

Add decorations and crabs, give them fresh food each day, you can place it in a spare clam shell which probably came in the shell bag. Read this article for other care advice:

When you have enough money you will need to buy:
- a sea sponge from the craft store which will help to keep the humidity up
- more things to climb on
- a piece of acrylic (plexiglass) to use as a lid, the hardware store will cut it

Do not buy any of the following: wire cage, gravel, wood chips, painted shells.
